923 miles

It's a good think I like driving, because I did an awful lot of it this weekend... I headed out of IL at 10:30 Friday morning, and it was smooth sailing- an easy 5 hours, especially having taken Ben's suggestion to download a few podcasts. Although I associate long drives with rocking out to my fav songs, WNYC's Radiolab podcast "Limits" was crazy awesome--it explored the limits of the human body and mind by looking at Ironman triathlons, cross-country bike races in which the riders bike 23 hours a day for 3000 miles, and memory competitions. It made the time fly by.

Link to WNYC's Radiolab site: Limits. I'd highly recommend it.

I had a great Friday night catching up with Kristy with the help of some fabulous Muscato wine and The Lincoln Lawyer. Saturday, I sweet-talked the staff at my LA Fitness into letting me work out despite the fact that I froze my account for a few months, which made me a very happy but very sore person, considering that I hadn't lifted in way too long. I watched the Gophs almost beat USC, then had an awesome dinner at Chino with Tay and Bridget, highlighted by watermelon mojitos and plantain nachos. YUM.

Spruce Haven = heavenly.
Sunday, on a whim, I decided to head up to the cabin instead of heading over to the Great Minnesota Get-Together. I mean, I'd already had my Sweet Marthas, and was dying to see 1) Super Tack, 2) the new car, and of course 3) my parents and grandparents- and the Jorgensons and Kulkas. Thankfully, Twins Territory extends all the way to Spooner, WI, so I had the game to keep me company on long drive #2 of the weekend. Apparently in crossing the state line into Wisconsin, I also crossed the line separating summer and fall because it was chilly (it got down to the mid-30s at night!)-- quite a drastic difference from the heat wave I came from in IL.  But, as always: it was fun catching up with everyone, we played P&A well into the night (ok, not really- we crashed at 10:30), and the food was to die for (Jorgy's mashed potatoes, Grandma's apple crisp, Mom's roasted potatoes...). Many thanks to Ben and Max for picking bushels of apples off the side of the road (who needs orchards to pick apples anyways?)-- Grandma was a machine in the kitchen, and whipped up some apple cake, apple pie, and applesauce to go along with the apple crisp. I topped off the weekend with a leisurely bike ride with Mom and Dad this afternoon on an ancient mountain bike that Dad salvaged from the basement.

Considering I got to do two things I've barely done in weeks these past few days- sleep in a real bed and be around my family and friends- it was tough leaving Cable, especially dreading the Labor Day traffic I had been warned about by my Rockford colleagues. But, armed with several weeks' worth of hot-off-the-stove applesauce, a few more podcasts and Mom's crock pot so that I can further explore the art of cooking (and/or not have to cook when I get home from work), I hit the road. I was psyched to find no traffic until the Dells, and even then, it only added an hour onto my drive. Thankfully (and how perfect is this?) the Twins were playing the Sox in a doubleheader, so I settled in with my Angie's Kettlecorn, listened to two Twins games on a Chicago station, and tried to pretend like I was at Target Field. Wishful thinking (too bad it was too cold for the sunroof- it probably would have made that scenario a little more realistic), but at least it made the stop-and-go traffic in the dark a little less miserable.

Rockford --> MSP --> Cable --> Rockford = 923 miles

Top 7 songs from the drive:
1. Better than Ezra~Desperately Wanting
2. Cold War Kids~Finally Begin
3. Kid Cudi~Up Up & Away
4. Redlight King~Built to Last
5. Angels and Airwaves~Shove
6. Red Hot Chili Peppers~Hard to Concentrate
7. Josh Kelley~Ain't Letting Go

Back to reality-- but, fall makes me one happy person. Sweatshirt & jeans weather, football, colorful leaves, apple orchards, and cooler temps that makes for perfect sleeping weather...maybe these next 6 weeks in Rockford will be bearable after all.
